If you want to lower your score fast, you have to master how to putt.
Golfers tend to concentrate only on the long shot/full swing and they forget or don’t pay the necessary attention to the short game.
Everybody makes that mistake, it’s normal, you want to hit harder and larger and forget about the short game.
Almost 40 to 45% of your shot comes from putting. To progress fast in your score you need to improve your putting.
When I was a kid I spent hours playing in the putting green, and of course, at that time I was very good at putting. This is something that I really recommend. Practice is everything in golf.
Eventually, I went to university, and for some periods, I abandoned my golf. When I returned my short game, especially the putting, was a disaster. (Approx 5 to 6 shots lost per round only with the putt).
To recover the short game (put, chip, pitch) I returned to the basics and later tried some advanced techniques.
There are very different putting techniques regardless of yours, the base is the same.
Here you have a list of some putting basics:
– The putt: In the market there are lots of putts. Look for one that you feel comfortable with.
The shaft length must be not too long or too short.
To know the right length take your stance, put your hands together while grabbing the putt. The grip of the putter has just to stand out off the hands.
– Take a comfortable stance. Bend your knees just a little.
– Shoulders and feet have to be square.
– Shoulders and hands form a triangle.
– Your form arm matches the shaft angle.
– Eyes over the ball.
– The hand centered with the ball. (Not behind or forward).
– Grip: Golfers use some different grips. Put the thumbs touching the flat section of the grip putter. The hands in a position that neither of them collapse/cover the other. One hand dorsal facing the right and the other to the left.
– Relax your hands – Don’t pressure your grip.
– The putter sole is parallel to the ground.
– The shot: move smoothly, back and forward, the triangle formed by your shoulders and hands in a pendulum fashion. Do not move your legs and hips and do not break your wrist (not hammering the ball).
– The back and forward speed have to be the same. Do not accelerate! To hit long you don’t need to hit harder, you need to do a longer swing.
– Always see the ball during the swing. If you rush to see where the ball goes you will probably push it to the right or left of your target.
